Carving Hints

Remember the contest is This Monday (10/24) so you should be carving or thinking about carving right now!

There are many new categories this year so we thought we would give out a few hints on the new ones. The judges will make their decision based on creativity, glow factor and how well it fits the category. You could follow the hints or take off on your own translation of the category name… some can be translated in different ways and the judges don’t always go for the obvious. Lots of detail is good but the simplest of ideas will work too. Be creative.

– Compost Zombie - Rotten but not forgotten.

– Mythic Monstrosity - Dragons, Cyclops, Greek Gods, Unsightly Unicorns… the list is endless.

– Frosty the Glow Man - Probably starts with 3…

– Evil Exoskeleton - Bugs, Bugs, Bugs, or something else…

– Freaky Facelift - Plastic surgery with a sense of humor or horror.

– Sports Illuminated - Any sport concept will probably do as long as it glows.

– Cackle & Squawk - Birds, Birds, Birds, or…

– Pablo Picassokin - Think Cubism.

– Candy Barf - Oh no, I think I had too… much… Can… dy…

– See poster below for the other 7

Also, please remember, if you are creating a scene or something hard to set up then it will be hard to take to the winners stand so think ahead and consider a board or base that can be  carried up or home in one piece.

If you need more ideas please browse all the photos of past contests in our Pumpkin Carving Galleries and visit Not Your Average Jack for more photos from past contests.

Good Luck and see you Monday!

Congratulations Cody!

The Bridgehampton Lions would also like to take this opportunity to introduce the names of the three new Guide Dogs we were able to sponsor because of generous donations from you this past year – Jack, Bauer, and Ginger. We will post photos as soon as we have them and look forward to sponsoring a few more after the upcoming Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Wow!

What a great Carving Contest this year! Thanks to all the carvers, sponsors and spectators, without you it would not be possible. We also wanted to tell you that the judges had a very difficult time this year, we feel like you all deserve to be acknowledged so great job! Seriously! We are hoping that crowds of people stopping to look at each and every one of your carvings (more then once) is intensive enough to keep you coming back.

We posted lots of photos in the gallery and hope you take the time to look – yours may be in there CARVING GALLERY 2010.

News 12 was there and will air a short spot this Sunday at 5pm and plans to add a longer one later this year.

The East Hampton Star, Sag Harbor Express & Southampton Press were there too, you may be in the paper this week so take a look tomorrow.

Plumb TV is also interviewing our first place winner today, keep an eye out for it

Thank You!

Carving Weekend

The contest starts this Monday at 5pm so this is your last chance to get it together… don’t wait till the last minute. Remember to follow the categories but if you have an idea that doesn’t fit go for one of the freestlye categories.

If you’re looking for ideas find a not so perfect pumpkin and let it speak to you or go to the links below to see some entries from last year. Often the simplest ideas are the best, you don’t have to be good with a blade to catch the judges eye.

All 16 categories are ALL AGES, kids and adults, just the 12 and under freestyle is limited by age.

All entries and admission is FREE!

Maximum 3 entries per person, one per category. Judging starts at dusk/dark so don’t be too late. All entries should be taken home after the contest. Please bring a candle for each of your entries.

Carving must be done in advance at home. No carving is permitted at the event.

The mystery category is…. Bozo Bizarro!

Don’t wait till the last minute, get out there and find your pumpkin this weekend and think about it all week because next weekend is for carving!

If you don’t have an idea in mind when looking for a pumpkin that’s OK, just look for the not so perfect ones and let them speak to you… the ones with more character tend to give you ideas. Keep your mind open and be creative. Following a category can also help but don’t forget about the freestyle option… last year there weren’t that many in the freestyle categories so there is a a good opportunity to win the big bucks if you think out of the box.

Remember it’s FREE to enter and you can ENTER UP TO 3 TIMES as long as each entry is in a separate category.

You can also check the Carving Contest Gallery and Not Your Average Jack http://www.notyouraveragejack.com for inspiration too.
